Why the Silver Coast is pure gold
Portugal's Atlantic coast has beautiful beaches, traditional townscapes and authentic food - and it's only half
the price of the Algarve.
Lovers of the real Portugal - where people still use donkeys, and old ladies wear black dresses and knee-high
stockings - are buying on the silver coast, but they are tormented by conflicting desires.
Traditional: the Silver Coast has been spared the overdevelopment which mars parts of the Algarve
They want to double their money as the stretch of coast running north of Lisbon to just above Nazare becomes
better known and more developed, but they desperately hope that the authentic Portuguese experience won't be
destroyed at the same time.
In the high season of July and August, when temperatures rocket, the beaches are filled with sunbathing
Portuguese, glistening like sardines packed in oil, but at other times you can walk for miles with the sound of
the Atlantic breakers in your ears and hardly meet another person.
Silver Coast Property
The sea is chilly - in fact the local nickname is the cold coast because of the water's temperature and the
occasional winds - but the beaches are superb sun-traps, many sheltered by rugged cliffs. Several are already
Meccas for surfers, and although new seafront developments are springing up the coast line remains largely
unspoilt, dotted with pretty towns and villages where people actually speak their own language rather than
English, and real Portuguese food is served instead of a toned-down version for northern palates.
As well as giving more of a flavour of the real Portugal, the silver coast has another massive advantage over
the Algarve - properties are roughly half the price.
Now, investors are hoping that the silver coast will see the sort of price increases which lucky early
investors raked in after buying on golf developments on the Algarve. Most also hope that further development
will be as controlled as the local authorities promise, so that it won't wreck the peaceful, empty feel of the
place.
Some of the country's most impressive architecture, historical and religious sites can be found in this region,
in the center of Portugal.
On the coastline, nearly empty beaches mix with quaint fishing towns and villages, of which Nazaré is one of
the finest examples; inland, fertile country stretches along the banks of rivers like the Tagus, producing
livestock and crops from grapes to fruit and rice.
Coimbra, the birthplace of six kings and the seat of the country's oldest university, fascinates with its
historical associations, and nearby you can visit the largest escavate Roman site in Portugal, Conímbriga.
Further north, the city of Aveiro, once a great seaport, still carries the charm of its canals and lagoon,
known as "the ria".
Not far from Lisbon, the ancient city of Leiria, with its fortified castle built early in the 12th century, is
a good base from which to visit the great abbeys of Batalha and Alcobaça and the well known shrine of
Fátima.
Regional food in all this area is richly varied: from the eel stew of Aveiro to roasted sucking pig near
Coimbra, and an immensity of seafood dishes along the coast.
Silver Coast Property
The Silver Coast region of Portugal has some incredible property bargains. Listed as the third most
profitable location in Europe to invest in (by "A place in the sun"), this location is taking off in a big
way.
The Portugal Silver Coast (Costa de Prata) region is booming ecomomically and has a strong capital growth on
property. Whilst this is a good reason to buy property here, it is by no means the only one.
The region is stunningly beautiful with wide golden stretches of unmarked sand, turquoise sea and rolling
countryside. You will find olive groves and luscious vineyards, with fantastic wines. The cost of living is a
fraction of the mediterranean hotspots or the Algarve and the people are friendly and welcoming.
The opening up of this region by the new A8 motorway from Lisbon means you can be sitting with a glass of wine
in your hand within an hours drive of the bright lights of Lisbon. Money is pouring into the region, but the
Portuguese have learned their lessons from the Algarve and developments are stricktly governed and controled to
ensure the beauty of the Silver Coast region is never spoiled.
